About the Ventilator Project

In January 2020, my wife said to me: “You have mechanical ability, why don’t you build a ventilator?” Because it was winter and I have a few friends and loved ones who have asthma, I decided to give it a whirl. After in-depth research, I learned that people tend to breathe about 10 to 20 times per minute (infants up to 40 or 50) and the amount of air for each breath averages about 132 cubic inches. Additionally, a ventilator should have an adjustable number of cycles, an adjustable amount of air exchanged in each cycle, and should be able to reliably operate continuously.

Armed with that information, I set about creating – and patenting – a do-it-yourself ventilator. Is it state-of-the-art? No. Could it save a life? Absolutely.

About Me

A teacher for 44 years, I retired from the faculty at Western Illinois University and then became the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of McDonough County Illinois for about two years. I have authored and co-authored eighteen books. Pleasantly married, and a proud father of three children, I enjoy many side projects such as this ventilator project,  other projects = see menu items across the top of this page, and enjoying the farm where I grew up. I currently reside in Macomb, Illinois.
